Petrol Line in Nepal-Should you get in line today?

The average daily petrol supplied these days was only 14.3% of the normal supply rate. But today NOC is distributing 600 kl of petrol today throughout KTM valley and Kavre, which is 100% more supply than on normal days. However would it meet demand of petrol of private riders and drivers in Kathmandu? No!


According to the data from DoTM, there are 103,792 registered cars/jeep and 657,000 motorbikes in Bagmati zone. Assuming that 97% of the cars and 90% of the bikes are in KTM and Kavre, potential number of cars and bikes that would be requiring petrol now would be 100,678 and 591,300 respectively.

But, most pumps were found to provide half of their today’s petrol quota to cars/jeeps and remaining half to motorbikes. So the total petrol available today for cars is 300 kl and another 300 kl is for bikes. Given the allocated quota of 15l per car and 5l per bike, the supplied petrol on total can serve only 20,000 cars and 60,000 bikes! Which is 20% of the available cars and only 10% of the available bikes. So if you are rich and own a car, you have better chances of acquiring petrol today!

Moreover, the petrol is to be distributed among 125 petrol pumps, if equally distributed, the average number of bikes needed to be served by a pump today is 4,730! Provided the allocated quantity of petrol, a pump can only serve 300 – 900 bikes today, an estimated average of 430 bikes served per pump! So you will potentially get petrol if you are within 300th or 400th queue (depending upon the petrol provided in the pump).

The supplied quantity of petrol is too little today. Even if calculating for 15l and 5l quotas, the total demand of petrol today would be around 1520 kl for cars and 2956 Kl for bikes. But the supplied amount is just 20% for the cars and only 10% for the bikes! Therefore it will be wise to stay at home and enjoy the Ghatastapana!
